GER: Die Kommunistische Partei Österreichs (KPÖ) wurde 1918 als Kommunistische Partei Deutsch-Österreich (KPDÖ) gegründet und ist somit eine der ältesten kommunistischen Parteien der Welt. Die KPÖ war von 1945 bis 1959 im Nationalrat und bis 1970 in mehreren Landtagen vertreten. 1949 trat sie zur Wahl unter der Bezeichnung Kommunistische Partei Österreichs und Linkssozialisten (KLS) an. 2005 gelang der KPÖ mit vier Sitzen der Wiedereinzug in den Landtag der Steiermark. Bundessprecher sind seit 2006 Melina Klaus und Mirko Messner. Die KPÖ ist Teil der Europäischen Linkspartei.

It played an important role in the Austrian resistance against the Nazis and fascism. The party publishes a newspaper called Volksstimmen (previously Volksstimme) and stands in elections, however, it has not had representation in the federal parliament since 1959. After losing its last representative in a state parliament, in Styria in 1970, it has become a fringe movement with limited political significance.
